Manage garbage at home

In Bengaluru, what you put out at the gate shapes what pourakarmikas can collect - and whether drains and corners stay clean. Citizens segregate. The city and private players process. The Notebook makes gaps visible.

Why segregation matters

Mixed waste is harder to lift, harder to compost, and easier to dump. Clean streams respect pourakarmikas’ labour and give BBMP and recyclers a chance to process instead of landfill-by-default.

At home · three streams

1 · Wet (green)

Cooked leftovers, peels, tea leaves, flowers, garden waste. Keep covered; empty daily if you can. This stream can go for composting where your ward or apartment supports it.

2 · Dry (blue / white)

Paper, cardboard, clean plastic, metal, glass. Rinse containers. Keep dry so recyclers can take them - don’t mix with wet waste.

3 · Sanitary / reject

Diapers, pads, masks, broken glass (wrapped). Never flush sanitary waste. Batteries and e-waste go to drop points - not the daily auto.

Apartments & bulk generators

Larger buildings often must manage wet waste on site or through an authorised arrangement. Common-area dumps and mixed chute bags undo every flat’s effort - ask your RWA for clear bins and a published pickup window.

Segregate wet, dry, sanitary. Out only in the collection window. No drain or vacant-plot dumping.
Pourakarmika / contractor
First-mile lift of segregated streams. Mixed bags slow them down and leak into corners.
BBMP ward
Schedules, black-spot clearance, enforcement, and sending waste to processing / DWCC paths.
Private / RWA / CSR
Composting, dry recyclers, bulk pickup pilots, apartment kits - where local trials exist.

Dispose the Bengaluru way

Put bags out only at the collection window for your street.
Don’t dump on vacant plots, storm drains, or under trees - report piles via the Notebook instead.
Bulk / construction debris needs authorised disposal - not the daily auto.
Don’t burn waste at the gate or in empty plots.

When pickup fails

Give the scheduled window a fair chance. If piles sit for days, use Contribute → Report with a photo (category: Garbage), add who it affects, and share on X so the ward ledger - and officials - can see it.
